Neck Pain
What Causes Neck Pain?
9 times out of 10, we see neck pain as being 1 of three things.
Poor posture from sitting on phones and laptops for hours are usually to blame for this. The further your head goes forwards, the less your neck can move from side to side or up and down. This causes the joints to lose their natural motion, resulting in it wearing and tearing at an accelerated pace
Accidents, such as car accidents can be a leading cause of neck pain. Usually, the pain doesn’t start the second the car made contact with you, in our experience, anywhere between 1-10 years after the accident is the time where the neck problems fester, until eventually they cause pain. A build up of scar tissues and adhesions make the neck very stiff and the joints become very unhealthy.
Disc issues. If the joints do become worn and torn through improper use, the discs that sit in between the bones degrade and can lead to a bulging disc. The pain typically characterised by a bulging dis in the neck is pain that refers to the shoulders, arms and sometimes down to the hands (depending on where he disc is pressing).
What can you do to try and fix it?
1. Try using an ice pack, rather than a hot bath
Typically, pressure on the nerves is caused by swelling. Going in a hot bath will temporarily get rid of the pain, but it will end up encouraging more swelling, so you’ll end up reaching for a heat pack/hot water bottle. Try using ice.
We recommend using an ice pack every 2 hours, for 20 minutes. Just make sure you wrap a tea towel or something similar around the ice pack first so you don’t get burned.
2. Neck Traction
A simple neck traction machine (that can be bought at our clinic) that sits on top of your door can relieve disc and nerve pressures. ideally, you would use this for 5 minutes, 3-4 times a day until the pain recedes and then 1-2 times a day for 3-5 minutes everyday, regardless of the pain being there or not.
3. Posture exercises
Training your body to ‘wind your neck in’ can be invaluable in fighting against neck pain. Simple floor based exercises where you lie face up, on a flat floor can easily be done. If you gently press your head into the floor to the count of 10 and repeat it 10 times, this will start to train the muscles on the back of your neck to keep your head more upright. If you do this 2 times a day that should be enough. for slightly poor posture, we would expect to see good results in 4 weeks, for really bad posture we have seen it take upwards of a year to improve. race.
